All dressed up but nothing to shoot…

We expected a bit more from sunrise this morning than it actually delivered.  The sky was mostly clear except, of course, for the bank of low clouds in the eastern sky, so sunrise by all definitions was a bust.

We decided to try Cadillac Mountain to see if there was anything interesting to shoot.  What we found was much different than what I had found a few days earlier.  In particular, the brilliant red blueberry bushes had lost their brilliant reds and were now mostly a dull red.

Today isn’t looking so good.

jaf_5224-edit The sun had finally shone itself, and we decided to stop at a pullout on the north western side of the mountain overlooking Eagle Lake. What was in front of us was a slightly past peak display of brilliant oranges, reds, and yellows that simply demanded to be photographed.  Photographic beggars can’t be choosers, so we obliged.

The images made during this session are not my favorites from an aesthetic standpoint, but are at least a nice representation of what I saw that morning.

I shot these foliage images with a 300mm lens – some with a 1.4x teleconverter and some without.

jaf_5249-edit-2_0 The wind was unbelievable this morning, so we decided to try Bubble Pond again.  I made some images, but nothing drastically different from the day prior.  Our next stop was Jordan Pond, which proved to be quite a challenge given the strength of the wind, and the fact that we were facing almost directly into it.

Images of the Bubbles from the grounds of the Jordan Pond House are about as cliche an image of Acadia as an image of the Lincoln Memorial is of Washington, D.C. Still, we were there, the sun was shining, the sky was blue, and the trees were all dressed up in their autumn finest, so I set the tripod and camera down and started composing my images.

jaf_5298-edit None of the images are anything to write home about but they were nice records of the dramatic colors that were evident that day.

The remainder of the day was spent on Deer Isle, about a 50 mile drive from Bar Harbor.  It looks to be a great place shoot, but the light was particularly uncooperative and we didn’t shoot much.  I hope to return sometime in better weather.

On the way out I made this image of some seaweed, which is sadly the best image I have from this afternoon’s shooting.

Tomorrow is our last full day in Maine.
